Grief Groups
The death of a loved one is a powerful and emotional experience. It can shatter life as we used to know it. Three elements that seem to assist in recovering from the devastating effects of such a loss are:
- Gathering information
- Galking to others about your loss
- Listening to others who have had similar experiences
Rev. Teri Masters, our Director of Pastoral Care and former chaplain with Trinity Care Hospice, periodically leads six week Grief Support Groups for adults. The groups typically meet for an hour and a half session each week during the day at PUC. The group size is limited to 8 participants. Please sign up with the PUC Pastoral Care.
Our next Grief Support Group begins September 13, 2010, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. and will be held in Pacific Unitarian Church's Shuder Library.
What is the purpose of a grief group?
The goal of the Grief Support Group is to create an atmosphere in which those who grieve can find healing. Join us to obtain emotional support, knowledge about the grief process, coping skills, resources, and fellowship.
Who may participate in the group?
Any adult who who is grieving the death of a loved one.
Is there a cost to be in the group?
No. We provide this group free of charge to anyone in the community who is dealing with a loss.
What is the time frame for the group?
The group will meet once per week for 6 weeks. Each session will be one and a half hours in length.
Can people join the group at any time?
Because of the progressive nature of the materials being covered, the group will close to new members after the first session.
Participants are asked to plan to attend all six sessions.
Do you have ground rules for the group?
Yes. The ground rules are simple and basic. First, we respect confidentiality of everyone in the group; second,
it is expected that each participant be honest with themselves in this process.
Then, we must allow each person the freedom to grieve according to their own personality. All of these ground rules are built upon the
premise of respect for one another.
How do I register for the group?
Call the church office and ask to have your name added to the list, or email Pastoral Care. The group is limited to 8 people.
If you have questions or need more information please contact Rev. Teri Masters, Interfaith Minister at (310) 378-9449 or her email address: pastoralcare@pacificunitarian.org.
Sharing our joys multiplies them, sharing our sorrows divides them.
