Minister's Message
Its great to be back from my month long sabbatical in Chicago. I taught several courses, took a course and served as the chaplain for Meadville Lombard Theological School . Their new location on South Michigan Ave. is beautiful, looking out over the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan. But more impressive than the smart classrooms and beautiful new space were the students themselves. They are bright, engaged and hopeful about our saving message for the 21st century. I have had a glimpse into the future of ministry and we are about to be transformed. Two of those students are community studies interns working under me; our own Marci Wayman, who is working for a community organization in Long Beach and Krista Weber who has been working with Toberman Neighborhood Center in San Pedro. This fall, Krista will begin her duties as our new Intern Minister.
What I bring back to you is hope. The problems we face are immense but the solutions are right before us starting with ourselves and this church. The overwhelming vote to continue to grow as a church community is the anthem to a new beginning here at PUC. I am ready to lead you to the promised land that this church is becoming. We will grow large enough in the next few years to reach out to more of those in need, to bring our values of justice to those around us and to improve our beautiful campus to be the center of our aspirations. This is the work I do best. I have led congregations to transformation before and with your energy we will grow in new and exciting ways. Our soul train is heading down the track, will you be on board?
Throughout this month we will be celebrating the transformative power of love as a church. Here is my first challenge to each and every one of you: Bring someone you love (or at least care deeply about) to church this month and introduce them to me. Invite them to be with us as we sing, celebrate and learn together.
We have the power to change the world starting with our own. Who is with me?
With Grace and Grit
